I declare War on Christmas!
TAPPED: November 2005 Archives: "The truth of the matter, of course, is that there is no liberal war on Christmas. Speaking personally, I think that's too bad -- I actually do hate Christmas and don't think 'euthanasia, abortion at will, gay marriage,' etc. are bad ideas at all." --Matthew Yglesias

Ezra Klein: Death For Thee But Not For Me
More on HPV. The virus is now suspected of causing mouth cancer. This is only one more reason that the Religious Right must stopped in their horrid campaign against the HPV vaccine and the modern world.

Kudos to DarkSyde. He sums it up very well.

Secularism and Practical Atheism
Austin Cline has a great post about what Secularism is and isn't, why it came into being, why it is the only way for a free and open society to remain free and open, and, most of all, why religious conservatives have such a big problem with it and don't quite understand what it is.

Science Friday: Thank Heaven, For Little Girls | Unscrewing The Inscrutable
I have Human papillomavirus. As a male, it's just an annoyance easily dealt with. I also have a very dear friend who had to have a hysterectomy before she was thirty due to cervical cancer, which is caused by HPV. The Christian Right opposes a vaccine against HPV, which will eliminate almost ALL cervical cancer within the next generation of women, because "'Giving the HPV vaccine to young women could be potentially harmful, because they may see it as a licence [sp?] to engage in premarital sex'" .
Embrace science (aka "reality"), vaccinate your children against HPV, and shun every fucking religious-right wingnut around!
UTI's Darksyde has some very important things to say about it.: "These people are not just deluded, they're also dangerous, not to mention cruel: It's fine with them if your sister's uterus goes cancerous and dribbles out in rancid bloody bits, from sitting on a toilet at the airport, because hey, it might scare some little girl into postponing sex."

Liberalization vs. Democracy: Reviewing America's Goals in the Middle East
Austin Cline gives a clear and concise resaon why nothing good can possibly come from what's happening in Iraq. Going from imposed secular totalitarianism to democratically elected theocratic totalitarianism is NOT an improvement, and it only cost several thousand lives and the trashing of America's world standing. What a bargain!
Liberalization vs. Democracy: Reviewing America's Goals in the Middle East: "The administration's goals for the Middle East cannot be achieved by democratization alone; they can only be achieved (if at all) though the promote of liberal democracies."
"It is no wonder that the President George W. Bush has expressed no specific interest in liberalization of the Middle East. In addition to some possible dislike of any concept with the word 'liberal' in it, there is the fact that promoting liberalization would be greeted by Middle Eastern leaders with much more hostility than the promotion of democracy has — and they are already suspicious of that. They know that liberalization would do even more to undermine their power and status than democratization would. What they don’t seem to understand is that democratization without liberalization would help Islamist parties come to power and, just as has been the case with Iran, that will result in governments which will be a danger to everyone — inside and outside the nation."
